Department of Traditional Affairs (DTA)
National Department · Central Government Administration
The Department of Traditional Affairs is responsible for policy and legislation on traditional and Khoi-San leadership and institutions. It shares a ministry with the Department of Cooperative Governance.
Its work covers the recognition and support of traditional leadership structures, the resolution of leadership disputes and claims, the development of partnerships between traditional councils and municipalities, and the alignment of customary institutions with the Constitution. It administers the Traditional and Khoi-San Leadership Act, 2019 (Act No. 3 of 2019), which for the first time provided statutory recognition for Khoi-San communities and leaders.
The National House of Traditional and Khoi-San Leaders and the Commission on Khoi-San Matters fall within its portfolio, as does the Commission on Traditional Leadership Disputes and Claims.
