The Human Sciences Research Council conducts social science research for public use. It was established in 1968 and operates under the Human Sciences Research Council Act, 2008 (Act No. 17 of 2008).

Its mandate is to undertake, promote and coordinate research in the human and social sciences that addresses the development needs of South Africa and the region, and to inform public policy and programmes.

Its research divisions cover human and social capabilities, inclusive economic development, developmental capable and ethical state, public health societies and belonging, and impact centres. It runs long-running national surveys including the South African Social Attitudes Survey and the national HIV prevalence survey. It reports to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
