Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency (IUCMA)
Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS)
The Inkomati-Usuthu Catchment Management Agency manages water resources in the Inkomati and Usuthu water management area in Mpumalanga. It operates under the National Water Act, 1998 (Act No. 36 of 1998).
It was among the first catchment management agencies established under the Act, which devolves water resource management to catchment level. Its functions include catchment strategy, water use authorisation, water quality monitoring and stakeholder coordination.
Its catchment is distinctive for being transboundary: the Inkomati and Usuthu systems flow into Mozambique and Eswatini, and South Africa carries treaty obligations on cross-border flows. The area also includes intensive forestry, sugar cane irrigation, coal mining and part of the Kruger National Park.
