Judicial Service Commission (JSC)

The Judicial Service Commission is the constitutional body responsible for advising on the appointment of judges and for dealing with complaints against them. It is established under section 178 of the Constitution.
Its membership is set by the Constitution and includes the Chief Justice, the President of the Supreme Court of Appeal, a Judge President, the Minister responsible for justice, advocates and attorneys, a teacher of law, members of the National Assembly including opposition representation, and delegates of the National Council of Provinces.
It interviews candidates in public and advises the President on judicial appointments; the President appoints the Chief Justice and Deputy Chief Justice after consulting it, and other judges on its advice. Through its Judicial Conduct Committee and the Judicial Conduct Tribunal it handles complaints against judges under the Judicial Service Commission Act.
