The Mine Health and Safety Council advises the Minister on occupational health and safety in mines. It was established under the Mine Health and Safety Act, 1996 (Act No. 29 of 1996).
It is a tripartite body, bringing together the state, organised labour and employers in the mining industry. Its function is to advise on legislation, promote a culture of health and safety, and oversee research directed at reducing fatalities, injuries and occupational disease in mining.
It funds and coordinates health and safety research, and monitors progress against the industry milestones for eliminating fatalities and occupational lung disease. Its work responds to a sector with historically high rates of fatal accidents and of silicosis and tuberculosis among mineworkers.
