Mintek is South Africa’s national mineral research organisation. It was established under the Mineral Technology Act, 1989 (Act No. 30 of 1989), and traces its origins to research work begun in the 1930s.
Its mandate is to promote mineral technology and to foster the establishment and expansion of industries in the field of minerals and products derived from them. It conducts research and development in mineral processing, extractive metallurgy, hydrometallurgy and pyrometallurgy.
It develops and licenses process technologies, provides analytical and testing services to the mining industry, and supports small-scale mining and mineral beneficiation. It also produces certified reference materials used by laboratories internationally. It reports to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
