National Arts Council (NAC)

The National Arts Council funds the arts in South Africa. It was established under the National Arts Council Act, 1997 (Act No. 56 of 1997).
It provides grants to individual artists, arts organisations and projects across disciplines including theatre, dance, music, visual art, literature, craft and multidiscipline work. Its purpose is to promote access to, and participation in, the arts, and to develop artistic expression.
It also funds bursaries for arts education and supports arts infrastructure and audience development. Its administration of the Presidential Employment Stimulus funding for the sector in 2021 gave rise to significant disputes over allocations and was the subject of an independent review. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
