National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa (NFO)
Public Entity · Finance and Administration Services · reports to Ombud Council
The National Financial Ombud Scheme South Africa resolves complaints by consumers against financial institutions. It began operating in March 2024, consolidating four previously separate industry ombud schemes into a single office.
The schemes it replaced covered banking, credit, life insurance and non-life insurance. Bringing them together gives consumers one entry point rather than requiring them to identify which of several schemes has jurisdiction over their complaint.
It investigates and determines complaints free of charge to consumers, and its determinations bind participating financial institutions. It is recognised by, and accountable to, the Ombud Council.
