National Heritage Council of South Africa (NHC)
Public Entity · Social Services · reports to Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC)
The National Heritage Council develops, promotes and protects South African heritage. It was established under the National Heritage Council Act, 1999 (Act No. 11 of 1999).
Its role is distinct from that of the heritage regulator: rather than permitting and protecting physical heritage resources, it advises the Minister on heritage policy, coordinates heritage institutions, and funds and promotes heritage projects.
Its work includes the promotion of living heritage and indigenous knowledge systems, support for the repatriation of heritage objects and human remains, and the transformation of the national heritage landscape so that it reflects the histories of all South Africans. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
