PetroSA is the national oil company, a subsidiary of the Central Energy Fund. It was formed in 2002 by merging Soekor, Mossgas and parts of the Strategic Fuel Fund.
It operates the gas-to-liquids refinery at Mossel Bay, which converts offshore natural gas and condensate into synthetic fuels using technology licensed from Sasol. It also holds upstream exploration and production interests, and markets refined products.
The depletion of the offshore gas fields feeding the refinery left it without adequate feedstock, and the plant has operated well below capacity or been idle for extended periods. Options including refurbishment, imported liquefied natural gas feedstock and partnership have been pursued. It now sits within the South African National Petroleum Company grouping.
