The South African Board for Sheriffs regulates the sheriffs’ profession. It operates under the Sheriffs Act, 1986 (Act No. 90 of 1986).
Sheriffs are the officers of the court responsible for serving and executing court process, including summonses, warrants of execution, attachments and evictions. The Board maintains the standards governing their conduct, administers their training, and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction over them.
It also administers the Fidelity Fund, which compensates people who suffer loss through the theft of money entrusted to a sheriff. Because sheriffs execute court orders that directly affect people’s property and homes, the Board’s conduct oversight carries particular weight.
