The South African Broadcasting Corporation is the national public broadcaster, operating under the Broadcasting Act, 1999 (Act No. 4 of 1999). It is a state-owned company with a board appointed by the President on the recommendation of the National Assembly.
It runs television and radio services with a public service mandate to inform, educate and entertain, and to broadcast in all of South Africa’s official languages. Its radio network is the largest in the country and includes stations serving each language community, alongside its television channels and news service.
It is funded by a mix of advertising revenue, television licence fees and government transfers, a model that has come under sustained strain. Its editorial independence, governance and funding have each been the subject of parliamentary inquiry and proposed legislative reform. It reports to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies and is licensed by ICASA.
