The South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions regulates the natural science professions. It operates under the Natural Scientific Professions Act, 2003 (Act No. 27 of 2003).
It registers professional natural scientists, candidate natural scientists and certificated natural scientists across a wide range of fields of practice, including biological, chemical, earth, environmental, agricultural, water and mathematical sciences.
Registration provides formal recognition of competence, and certain work, including specialist studies in environmental impact assessment, is expected to be performed by registered professionals. The Council sets competency standards, evaluates qualifications, requires continuing professional development, and exercises disciplinary jurisdiction. It reports to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
