South African Library for the Blind (SALB)

The South African Library for the Blind provides a national library service to people who are blind or print-disabled. It operates under the South African Library for the Blind Act, 1998 (Act No. 91 of 1998), and is based in Makhanda in the Eastern Cape.
It produces and lends reading material in braille and audio formats, and distributes it by post at no charge to registered users across the country. It maintains a large braille and audio collection and produces new titles in South African languages.
It also lends braille and audio playback equipment, and supports braille literacy. Its service addresses what is often described as the book famine facing print-disabled readers, given how small a proportion of published material is available in accessible formats. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
