The South African National Space Agency coordinates and promotes South Africa’s space activities. It was established under the South African National Space Agency Act, 2008 (Act No. 36 of 2008).
Its functions cover earth observation, space science, space engineering and space operations. It acquires and distributes satellite imagery used for agriculture, disaster management, human settlements and environmental monitoring, and it operates ground station facilities at Hartebeesthoek that support international space missions.
Its space science programme at Hermanus operates a magnetic observatory and provides the country’s space weather monitoring and warning service, which is a regional centre for aviation space weather advisories. It reports to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
