The South African Post Office is the designated national postal operator, operating under the South African Post Office SOC Ltd Act, 2011 and the Postal Services Act, 1998.
It holds the statutory reserved postal mandate for certain categories of mail and is obliged to provide universal postal service across the country, including in areas where service is not commercially viable. Its branch network has also been used to deliver government services, including social grant payments and motor vehicle licence renewals.
The organisation entered business rescue in 2023 following sustained losses, branch closures and declining mail volumes, and its business rescue plan provides for a substantially reduced footprint and a repositioning around parcels, e-commerce logistics and government services. The Postbank was separated from it into a standalone state-owned bank.
