The State Information Technology Agency provides information technology, information systems and related services to government. It was established under the State Information Technology Agency Act, 1998 (Act No. 88 of 1998).
Its role is to consolidate and coordinate the state’s information technology resources so as to achieve cost savings, interoperability and security across departments. Certain categories of IT procurement by departments must be conducted through it, and it operates government’s wide area network, data centres and a range of transversal systems including the personnel and payroll system.
Its procurement turnaround times and system availability have been persistent points of criticism, and reform proposals have included restructuring its mandatory services. It reports to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
