Statistics South Africa (Stats SA)

National Department · Central Government Administration · reports to The Presidency

Statistics South Africa is the national statistical service, established under the Statistics Act, 1999 (Act No. 6 of 1999). It is headed by the Statistician-General, who is independent in exercising professional judgement about statistical methods and outputs.

It produces the official statistics on which planning, budgeting and monitoring across government depend, including the Consumer Price Index, gross domestic product, the Quarterly Labour Force Survey, and the General Household Survey. It also conducts the national Census, most recently Census 2022, and maintains the population estimates derived from it.

Beyond producing statistics, the organisation coordinates the national statistics system and sets quality standards for statistics produced by other organs of state.
