The Technology Innovation Agency supports the translation of research into commercial products and services. It was established under the Technology Innovation Agency Act, 2008 (Act No. 26 of 2008).
Its purpose is to bridge the gap between research output and the market, the stage at which promising technologies frequently fail for lack of funding. It provides funding and support for technology development, prototyping, piloting and commercialisation.
Its focus areas include health innovation, industry, agriculture, mining and advanced manufacturing. It supports technology stations hosted at universities, technology transfer offices, and youth technology innovation programmes. It reports to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
