Telkom is South Africa’s largest fixed-line telecommunications operator and a substantial mobile and information technology business. It is listed on the Johannesburg Stock Exchange, with government as its largest shareholder alongside the Public Investment Corporation.
It operates the national fixed-line network, and through Openserve provides wholesale fixed access and fibre infrastructure to other operators. Telkom Mobile competes in the mobile market, BCX supplies information technology and converged services to enterprises, Gyro manages its property and mast portfolio, and Yellow Pages operates its directory business.
It was corporatised in 1991 and partially privatised through a public offering in 2003. It falls within the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies portfolio and is regulated by the Independent Communications Authority of South Africa.
