The Market Theatre Foundation runs the Market Theatre in Newtown, Johannesburg, together with the Windybrow Arts Centre in Hillbrow and the Market Photo Workshop.
The Market Theatre opened in 1976 in a converted Indian fruit market and operated as a non-racial theatre in defiance of apartheid segregation laws, becoming known internationally as the theatre of the struggle. Works including *Woza Albert!*, *Sophiatown*, *Asinamali!* and *The Island* premiered or were developed there.
The Market Photo Workshop, founded by David Goldblatt in 1989, trains photographers and has produced a significant number of leading South African documentary photographers. The Foundation reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
