The Playhouse Company is a national performing arts institution in central Durban, operating a complex of theatres in buildings that began as a cinema and a Tudor-style theatre in the 1920s and 1930s.
It runs several venues of differing scale, presenting drama, dance, opera, music and community theatre. Its programming has a strong emphasis on work in isiZulu and on the performance traditions of KwaZulu-Natal, alongside classical repertoire.
It runs development programmes for emerging practitioners in the province, including its dance and drama residencies and youth programmes. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
