Transnet is South Africa’s freight logistics company, wholly owned by government and responsible for the country’s freight rail network, commercial ports and petroleum pipelines.
It operates through several divisions: Transnet Freight Rail, which runs the general freight and heavy haul export lines for coal and iron ore; Transnet National Ports Authority, which is the landlord of the eight commercial ports; Transnet Port Terminals, which operates terminals within those ports; Transnet Pipelines, which moves refined petroleum products and gas; and Transnet Engineering, which manufactures and maintains rolling stock.
Declining rail volumes and port congestion have made its performance a constraint on export industries, particularly mining and agriculture. Reform under the National Rail Policy and the Freight Logistics Roadmap includes separating infrastructure management from operations and opening the rail network to third-party operators.
