Umalusi is the quality council for general and further education and training. It operates under the General and Further Education and Training Quality Assurance Act, 2001, and the National Qualifications Framework Act, 2008.

It develops and manages the General and Further Education and Training Qualifications Sub-Framework, accredits private schools and private colleges, and quality assures the assessment leading to qualifications including the National Senior Certificate, the National Certificate Vocational and the Senior Certificate.

Its approval is required before matric results may be released each year, and its statement on the credibility of the examinations is a formal precondition for their publication. Its name comes from the isiZulu word for shepherd.
