The Department of Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation, located in the Presidency, is responsible for national development planning and for monitoring and evaluating government performance.

It is the custodian of the National Development Plan, and translates it into the Medium Term Development Plan and the annual performance agreements government departments work to. It runs the frontline service delivery monitoring programme, the Presidential Hotline, and the national evaluation system that assesses whether programmes achieve their intended results.

It also coordinates the operation of government’s cluster system and produces the assessments that inform the President’s oversight of departmental performance. Statistics South Africa works closely with it on the data underpinning national planning.
