The Academy of Science of South Africa is the official national academy of science, established in 1996 and recognised under the Academy of Science of South Africa Act, 2001 (Act No. 67 of 2001).
Its membership is drawn from distinguished scholars across all fields of scholarly enquiry, elected by their peers. Its role is to provide evidence-based scientific advice to government and society on issues of national importance.
It produces consensus study reports on topics including health, energy, nutrition and education, publishes scholarly journals and the *South African Journal of Science*, and runs the national scholarly publishing quality assurance programme. It represents South African science in international academy networks.
