Air Traffic and Navigation Services provides air traffic management for South African airspace, operating under the Air Traffic and Navigation Services Company Act, 1993 (Act No. 45 of 1993).
It provides air traffic control at the country’s licensed airports, area control across South African airspace, and the communication, navigation and surveillance infrastructure that supports them. Its responsibility extends over roughly ten percent of the world’s airspace, including a large oceanic sector over the South Atlantic and Indian Oceans delegated to South Africa under international agreement.
It also provides aeronautical information services, search and rescue coordination support, and training through its Aviation Training Academy. It is funded by charges on airspace users and reports to the Department of Transport, with safety oversight by the South African Civil Aviation Authority.
