Airports Company South Africa owns and operates South Africa’s principal airports. It was established under the Airports Company Act, 1993 (Act No. 44 of 1993), and is majority owned by government.
It runs nine airports, including the three international gateways at OR Tambo in Johannesburg, Cape Town International and King Shaka in Durban, together with Port Elizabeth, East London, George, Kimberley, Upington and Bram Fischer in Bloemfontein. OR Tambo is the busiest airport on the African continent.
Its revenue comes from aeronautical charges levied on airlines and passengers, which are regulated by an independent Regulating Committee, and from non-aeronautical sources including retail concessions, parking and property. It reports to the Department of Transport.
