Alexkor is a state-owned diamond mining company operating in the Alexander Bay area of the Northern Cape, at the mouth of the Orange River. It was established under the Alexkor Limited Act, 1992 (Act No. 116 of 1992).
Its land and marine mining rights were the subject of a land claim by the Richtersveld community, which the Constitutional Court upheld in 2003, finding that the community had held rights in the land under indigenous law. The deed of settlement that followed transferred land and mining rights to the community.
Its land mining operations are now conducted through the Alexkor-Richtersveld Mining Company pooling and sharing joint venture, in which the company and the community are partners. It retains its marine diamond mining rights.
