The Border Management Authority manages South Africa’s ports of entry and the border law enforcement area. It was established under the Border Management Authority Act, 2020 (Act No. 2 of 2020), and became operational in 2023.
Its creation consolidated border functions that had been distributed across several departments, including immigration, agricultural and environmental inspection, and port health, into a single armed authority with border guards.
It performs immigration, customs support, agricultural, environmental and health functions at land ports, seaports and airports, and patrols the land borderline. Customs revenue collection remains with the South African Revenue Service. It reports to the Department of Home Affairs.
