Broadband Infraco is a state-owned long-distance telecommunications infrastructure company. It was established under the Broadband Infraco Act, 2007 (Act No. 33 of 2007).
It was created to expand the availability and affordability of long-distance broadband capacity by building and operating a national fibre backbone, on the reasoning that high backhaul costs were a barrier to affordable retail broadband.
It sells capacity on a wholesale basis to licensed operators and internet service providers rather than to end customers, and holds a share in the West Africa Cable System submarine cable. Government has pursued its consolidation with other state telecommunications infrastructure entities. It reports to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
