The Commission for Gender Equality is one of the six state institutions supporting constitutional democracy established under section 181 of the Constitution, and is independent and subject only to the Constitution and the law.
Section 187 requires it to promote respect for gender equality and the protection, development and attainment of gender equality. It may monitor, investigate, research, educate, lobby, advise and report on issues concerning gender equality, and it has the powers of investigation and subpoena set out in the Commission for Gender Equality Act.
Its work includes monitoring compliance with the country’s obligations under international and regional instruments on the rights of women, investigating complaints of gender discrimination, and reviewing legislation and policy for their effect on gender equality.
