The Council for Geoscience is the national custodian of geoscientific information. It was established under the Geoscience Act, 1993 (Act No. 100 of 1993), and traces its origins to the Geological Survey founded in 1912.
It maps the geology of South Africa, maintains the national geoscience database and collections, and conducts research on the country’s mineral and energy resources. Its geological mapping programme underpins mineral exploration and land use planning.
Its other functions include seismic monitoring through the national seismograph network, geohazard assessment including sinkhole and mine-related instability, groundwater and engineering geology, and the assessment of derelict and ownerless mines. It reports to the Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources.
