The Council for Scientific and Industrial Research is South Africa’s central scientific and technology research organisation. It was established in 1945 under legislation now consolidated in the Scientific Research Council Act, 1988 (Act No. 46 of 1988).
Its mandate is to undertake directed and multidisciplinary research and technological innovation that contributes to industrial development and improves the quality of life of South Africans. It conducts contract research for government and industry alongside parliamentary-funded research.
Its research clusters cover defence and security, next generation health, smart mobility, manufacturing, mining, energy, chemicals, agriculture, and next generation enterprises and institutions. It hosts the Centre for High Performance Computing and the South African National Research Network. It reports to the Department of Science, Technology and Innovation.
