The Government Communication and Information System is the central communication agency of the South African government. It provides strategic leadership and coordination for government communication so that the public receives timely and accurate information about policies, programmes and services.

It runs the government’s media liaison and rapid response functions, produces the *South Africa Yearbook* and the *Vuk’uzenzele* newspaper, operates the Thusong Service Centre programme, and manages government advertising and the gov.za portal. It also conducts public opinion research to inform communication planning.
