Government Employees Pension Fund (GEPF)
Public Entity · Finance and Administration Services · reports to National Treasury
The Government Employees Pension Fund is the pension fund for South African public servants and the largest pension fund in Africa. It was established under the Government Employees Pension Law, 1996, and serves government employees, pensioners and beneficiaries.
It is a defined benefit fund, meaning members’ benefits are determined by a formula based on years of service and final salary rather than by investment returns. Benefits include retirement, resignation, death, funeral and spouse’s pensions.
The fund does not manage its own money or administration. Its assets are invested on its behalf by the Public Investment Corporation, and member records, contributions and benefit payments are administered by the Government Pensions Administration Agency. Its scale makes it a significant shareholder across the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and a major funder of South African government debt.
