The iSimangaliso Wetland Park Authority manages South Africa’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site, inscribed in 1999. It operates under the World Heritage Convention Act, 1999 (Act No. 49 of 1999).
The park stretches along the KwaZulu-Natal coast from the Mozambique border to Maphelane, covering some 3,300 square kilometres. It contains an exceptional range of ecosystems in close proximity, including coral reefs, sandy beaches, coastal dunes among the highest in the world, lake systems, swamps, wetlands and coastal forest.
The Authority manages conservation, tourism development and community benefit across the park. Its mandate expressly links conservation with local economic development, and it has undertaken large-scale land rehabilitation and the reintroduction of game.
