The Master of the High Court administers deceased and insolvent estates, the affairs of minors and people under curatorship, and the registration of trusts. It operates as a service of the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development, with offices attached to each division of the High Court.
Under the Administration of Estates Act, 1965 (Act No. 66 of 1965) it registers deceased estates, issues letters of executorship, examines liquidation and distribution accounts, and supervises executors. It appoints trustees in insolvent estates and liquidators in company liquidations, and authorises tutors and curators.
It also administers the Guardian’s Fund, which holds money on behalf of minors, unborn heirs and other beneficiaries who cannot manage it themselves, and registers trust instruments and issues letters of authority to trustees.
