Media Development and Diversity Agency (MDDA)

The Media Development and Diversity Agency promotes media development and diversity in South Africa. It was established under the Media Development and Diversity Agency Act, 2002 (Act No. 14 of 2002).
Its purpose is to enable historically disadvantaged communities and people not adequately served by the media to gain access to it, both as owners and as audiences. It funds community radio and television, community print media and small commercial media.
It is funded by government together with contributions from the commercial broadcasting and print sectors. Its support has been significant in sustaining community radio, which reaches audiences in languages and areas the commercial sector does not serve. It reports through the Presidency.
