The National Archives and Records Service preserves the documentary heritage of South Africa and regulates records management in national government. It operates under the National Archives and Records Service of South Africa Act, 1996 (Act No. 43 of 1996).

It takes custody of the records of national government bodies that have enduring value, preserves them and makes them accessible for research. It also sets records management standards for national departments and public entities, and approves the disposal of public records, which may not lawfully be destroyed without its authorisation.

It maintains the National Register of Non-Public Records and the National Automated Archival Information Retrieval System. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
