The National Electronic Media Institute of South Africa develops digital skills. It was founded in 1998, initially to train people from previously disadvantaged backgrounds for the broadcasting industry.
Its mandate has since broadened from broadcast training to digital skills more generally, and it now coordinates the national digital skills effort. It operates through a network of provincial CoLabs hosted at universities, each with a thematic focus, which deliver training and research in partnership with local institutions.
Its programmes cover digital literacy for citizens, skills for the workplace, and higher-level capabilities in areas such as data science and cybersecurity. It reports to the Department of Communications and Digital Technologies.
