The National Museum in Bloemfontein is a national natural and cultural history museum, founded in 1877.
Its research and collections cover palaeontology, archaeology, entomology, herpetology, ornithology, mammalogy, karoo palaeontology, rock art, anthropology and history. Its Karoo fossil collections are internationally significant for the study of the therapsids that preceded mammals.
Its public sites include the main museum building, the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, the First Raadsaal, the Freshford House Museum and the Florisbad Quaternary Research Station, where the Florisbad skull was recovered. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
