Nelson Mandela Museum

The Nelson Mandela Museum is a public entity in the Eastern Cape reporting to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture. It was opened by Nelson Mandela on 11 February 2000, ten years to the day after his release from prison.
The museum operates across sites associated with Mandela’s early life: the Bhunga Building in Mthatha, and the Nelson Mandela Youth and Heritage Centre at Qunu, with a visitors’ centre at Mvezo. The Bhunga Building carries its own heritage significance — built in 1927–28, it housed the United Transkeian Territories General Council and later the Transkei parliament.
The museum’s mandate follows Mandela’s own instruction that it should not be a static collection or a tribute to him, but a living memorial to his values that inspires visitors and acts as a catalyst for development in the region.
