The Passenger Rail Agency of South Africa provides commuter and long-distance passenger rail services. It was established under the Legal Succession to the South African Transport Services Act and reports to the Department of Transport.
It operates through several businesses: Metrorail, which runs urban commuter rail in Gauteng, the Western Cape, KwaZulu-Natal and the Eastern Cape; Shosholoza Meyl, which runs long-distance passenger trains; Autopax, which operates the Translux and City to City bus services; and Intersite, which manages its property portfolio.
The agency owns extensive rail infrastructure and stations, and its commuter services historically carried the majority of public transport rail passengers. Vandalism, cable theft and infrastructure failure caused a severe collapse in services, and its recovery programme has focused on restoring priority corridors, replacing rolling stock and securing the network.
