The Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority regulates the private security industry in South Africa. It was established under the Private Security Industry Regulation Act, 2001 (Act No. 56 of 2001).
It registers security service providers, both businesses and individual security officers, and sets and enforces standards for training, conduct and firearm competency. Registration is compulsory, and it maintains the register on which lawful employment in the industry depends.
The private security industry in South Africa employs substantially more people than the police service, which makes the Authority’s oversight of training standards, wage compliance and conduct significant. It reports to the Minister of Police.
