Rand Water
Public Entity · Economic Infrastructure and Development · reports to Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS)
Rand Water is the largest bulk water utility in Africa, supplying treated water to Gauteng and parts of Mpumalanga, the North West and the Free State. It was founded in 1903 and operates as a water board under the Water Services Act, 1997.
It abstracts raw water largely from the Vaal Dam system, purifies it at large treatment works including Zuikerbosch and Vereeniging, and pumps it through an extensive network of pipelines and reservoirs to municipalities, mines and industry. Its service area covers a substantial share of South Africa’s population and economic output.
As a bulk supplier it sells to municipalities rather than to households, so household service quality also depends on municipal reticulation and maintenance. It reports to the Department of Water and Sanitation.
