Robben Island Museum manages Robben Island in Table Bay, off Cape Town, as a museum and heritage site. It was declared a national museum in 1997 and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999.
The island was used for the isolation and imprisonment of people for almost four centuries, including political prisoners under apartheid. Nelson Mandela was held there for eighteen of his twenty-seven years in prison, alongside Walter Sisulu, Ahmed Kathrada, Robert Sobukwe and many others. It was also a leper colony and a wartime defence station.
The museum operates tours from the V&A Waterfront, with former political prisoners often serving as guides, and maintains the Mayibuye Archives in partnership with the University of the Western Cape. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
