Sasria SOC Ltd
Public Entity · Finance and Administration Services · reports to National Treasury
Sasria is the only insurer in South Africa providing cover against damage caused by special risks, including civil commotion, public disorder, strikes, riots, terrorism and labour disturbances. It is a state-owned company reporting to National Treasury.
It was established in 1979 as the South African Special Risks Insurance Association, at a point when conventional insurers withdrew cover for politically motivated damage, and was converted into a public company in 1998. Its cover is sold as an add-on through conventional insurers and brokers rather than directly.
Because it is the sole provider of this cover, its role is significant in keeping property and business interruption risk insurable. The July 2021 civil unrest in KwaZulu-Natal and Gauteng produced by far the largest claims event in its history, and government provided a capital injection to support settlement of those claims.
