The Social Housing Regulatory Authority regulates and funds the social housing sector. It was established under the Social Housing Act, 2008 (Act No. 16 of 2008).
Social housing is subsidised rental accommodation for households in a defined income band, delivered by accredited social housing institutions in designated restructuring zones, with the aim of promoting spatial and economic integration.
The Authority accredits and regulates social housing institutions, disburses the restructuring capital grant that makes projects viable, and monitors compliance and the condition of the stock. It reports to the Department of Human Settlements.
