The South African Heritage Resources Agency is the national heritage regulator. It was established under the National Heritage Resources Act, 1999 (Act No. 25 of 1999).
It identifies, protects and manages the national estate, which includes places and objects of cultural significance: archaeological and palaeontological sites, graves and burial grounds, structures older than sixty years, shipwrecks, meteorites and heritage objects.
It declares national heritage sites, issues permits for work affecting protected heritage resources, comments on development applications through the heritage impact assessment process, and maintains the national heritage resources inventory. Provincial heritage resources authorities carry out equivalent functions at provincial level. It reports to the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
